del Rio kennels – home to belgian malinois bio picture

Welcome to del Rio malinois!

The Belgian Malinois is a highly athletic, intelligent and active breed. These are traits that first drew us into the Belgian Malinois.  Once you have brought one into your life, you discover how much more there is to fall in love with.  The Malinois can bring endless joy and at times, heartache. But throughout the journey with this wonderful breed, you will realize your life is so much more enriched than it would have been without a "Maligator" by your side.

Bobby and Angela live in Frederick County near Winchester, Virginia which is located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of northern Virginia, about an hour west of Washington, DC.

Their breeding program takes into consideration temperment and character, first and foremost, as well as the physical health of the parents.  The utmost concern is spent on development of the litter through the first few weeks of their lives, and training and upbringing of the Malinois once accepted into their loving homes. We stand by our puppies, not just as breeders, but as champions of the breed and friends of their new owners.

This blog will present you with the images, stories, and videos of our Malinois. At times, we will carry a story and a picture from our extended Malinois family. Feel free to contact us or comment on our site.

Plans – Upcoming Litters

2012 – The D Litter

Change of plans:  Thai will be bred to Bono in January 2012!

The D litter sire is Bono, Ireland du Hameau St-Blaise RN (AKC major pointed, UKC pointed), and the dam is Thai, CH Allee Sablee Bangkok del Rio, RA, CGC born March 6, 2007.

Thai is a medium-large female with full dentition, a scissors bite and a thick red coat.  She has a typical Belgian temperament, social, but not overly so. As she developed, she went through a short period of aloofness, but came completely out of it in adolescence. Currently, if you visit, she will likely hold you down and wash your face if you allow it.  She is easy to handle and very tolerant.  She loves to be touched, and adores retrieving a ball as well as playing with toys.  She is a fabulous house dog who does not destroy things, and will patiently stay inside all day if needed.  Thai is quite tolerant of children as well.  She has very strong herding instinct and has had some herding lessons.  She is very stable with excellent character and not fearful.  Off leash, she stays close, is quite obedient, joyful and very active. Her ability to jump is incredible and she has a high desire to work with her handler.  She has a lot of prey drive and small critters are not safe!  However, her biddability allows us to work off leash even in the presence of poodles, but prey drive is something new owners should be prepared to manage and direct.

Stats:

BITE:  Scissors, full dentition

23.5″  Wicketed height

59 lbs# current weight as of January 2012

Sire is Bono, Ireland du Hameau St-Blaise RN (AKC major pointed, UKC pointed)

Bono won Reserve Winners Dog his first time in the show ring at the 2010 ABMC specialty.  He was held back from showing as he was slow to mature, and in 2011 has racked up 15 points with one major.

He is a warm fawn with a lot of charbonnage, is very outgoing and friendly, gentle and sweet.  He is very biddable and has a high desire to work with you.  He loves children and other animals, and is a very easy dog.  While he has good herding instinct, he really loves agility and obedience and these sports are what we are concentrating on with him.
