Anniversary Day

Today is a del Rio anniversary. We have been married four wonderful years and have been del Rio just over 10 years. We took some time to give the dogs some play time. The last picture is from a herding trial in which turkeys were on the menu and a Sheltie thought that was just fine!

We have a small creek which runs at the back of our property. The dogs just love to play in it regardless of the season but today was a wonderful day.

I haven’t posted in a long time…..but I have something to say.

Thai came home. Slightly changed. A bit different. More mature but the same mischievous character was there.

What did I expect? I sent her out on a jet plane, knowing she’d be back but not really sure when. I sent her off in hopes that the experiences she would have would change her life forever. And mine. I sent her off to another male.

I know Sam. Known him since he was a youngster. I’ve seen his successes in person and hurt for him when acknowledgements were withheld. He’s been part of my Facebook profile picture since day 1. But this was different. He would now be the new man in Thai’s life. That was always the plan and yet it left me with mixed thoughts. Thai met Sam. And loved it. Loved it long time. Maybe too much. But I digress.

Thai came home. Nature willing, in two months, we’ll have come full circle. She, once a puppy newborn herself, would now begin the journey as mother to a litter.

Her trip to her destiny did not start out the best. A quick trip across country from our Nation’s capital to the West Coast turned into a 15 hour ordeal. Mental anguish, wringing of hands, angry phone calls to the airline and some tears turned into sighs of relief as she finally made it into the arms of her doggy mother in law. American Airline sucks. But that’s a whole ‘nuther story.

Thai’s observation of the whole ordeal? “It smells so different here but I’ll wag my tail to let you know I’m doing just fine!”

And she did fine. Thai got tied. Again and again. And again. Sam met his hussy match. Again? Yup, let’s do it again. And again. And again…. If they could have smoked, I would have purchased stock in Philip Morris. I have suspicions that a internet video will show up on TMZ and shock the nation. But that was part of the grand scheme. Long distance relationships are hard to maintain and you never want to sleep with your one night stands again. But, Thai and Sam might meet again one day.

Thai is home. Nose bonked me immediately. The rest of the family noticed the change in her too but quickly accepted her back……then proceeded to ignore her as Belgians sometimes do.

Tammy and Thai do this thing in which they will tug on a toy but without TUGGING. They will just stand there, waiting for the other to do something. They will not make a sound or move a muscle. Its bizarre.

Vesper Goes a-Herding….sort of

We took the Mali girls herding today. Thai was stellar in her training time, Tammy sort of had inklings in her first meeting with sheep and Vesper just looked pretty. We met up with Sebastian [Tribal Malinois] and his owner Sara, as well as Steve and Meagen. Steve and Meagen are interested in a Malinois so we dragged them out to a farm to watch our herding practice. We all them trooped into town for a bit o’ lunch at The General Store Cafe [http://www.thegeneralstorecafe.com]

Too bad we had to drive three hours to have a great time but it was worth it!

I’ve been in So. Cal this week so my opportunity to post has been limited. Been a bit busy with work…..
AND….the home front reports that our crummy internet is out again at the house. I swear Comcast just is not a great company.

That being said, we thought we would post a endearing video of Miss Thai playing with her brothers and sisters. She has taken a HUGE liking to the pack and sometimes will jump in and out as she tries to figure out why she gets these motherly feelings. In this video she plays as much as she can. You can tell she has to be careful. Note the times she gently lays down. Unfortunately, she gets as unnerved by the pups as I do

Be very glad we didn’t film the part where she barfs up her dinner for them…..yummy!

Jackson Meets Thai

Mr. Jackson’s daddy came up from Rhode Island during the ABMC National Specialty and was able to hang out for few hours.

Jackson, at first overwhelmed by all of the Malinois in one place, soon came out of his shell and became the life of the party. At least my party. He was able to meet his breeders Angela and Sandy as well as his surrogate daddy [Me!]. He was still as gorgeous as the day he went home with Ashleigh and Ryan.
